Field data, petrographic features and chemical data (major and minor elements, Sr isotopic composition, REE) indicate that the upper Ordovician granitoids display the characters of the continental plutonic provinces. This plutonism is associated with the synchronous eruption of volcanic rocks. The main chemical characters of these volcanics are identical to those of the granitoids: therefore the cogenetic nature of all these melts can be maintained. The genesis of this magmatism is discussed and referred to a process of crustal anatexis. The anomalous thermal situation of the upper Ordovician crust implied by this process is tentatively referred to an orogenetic context.
