Electronic excitation cross sections for Na+ with Na and K+ with K collisions are measured as a function of collision energy (from threshold up to about 1 keV) in a crossed atom-ion beam apparatus with spectroscopic detection. The observed dynamics is correlated with the details of the electronic structure of the alkali dimer ions.
