Equine anesthesia carries a greater risk of death compared to both small animals or humans. Such risk increases during laparotomy for colic or when a total inhalation maintenance regimen is adopted. Lidocaine has been widely used in equine anesthesia due to its analgesic, antiinflammatory, antiendotoxic and prokinetic effects as well as for its halogenates sparing-effect. Despite these advantages, there's a strict correlation between lidocaine plasma levels and signs of intoxications. Colic horses show haemodynamic instability and this condition, together with general anesthesia could affect lidocaine plasma level. The study aim to evaluate the effects of an infusion of lidocaine preceded or not by a loading dose on the ETISO, heart rate, mean arterial blood pressure, anesthetic stability and quality of recovery in horses undergoing laparotomy for colic.
