Since the late '70s, impressive achievements have been made in the optimization of electrical, structural, chemical, mechanical/optical properties of various organic materials for device applications. Organic semiconductors hold the promise of simple, large area solution deposition, low thermal budgets as well as compatibility with flexible substrates, thus emerging as viable alternatives for cost-effective photovoltaic cells (OPVs), light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), thin-film transistors (OTFTs), and chemical/biological sensors. In this communication we report the solution and solid state structural/ electrochemical/optical properties of a carbohelicene quinone (i.e. benzo[i] pentahelicene-3,6-dione), as well as its peculiar crystallization behavior and the preliminary results detailing the TFT performance. Carbohelicenes are part of an intriguing class of polyaromatic molecules featuring a unique helical, nonplanar -electron system. These molecules show extraordinary electronic and optical properties, and their polarizability provides a propensity to undergo pi-stacking, thereby making them interesting candidates as active materials in organic electronics.
