This paper deals with some considerations on the mechanical characteristics of masonry pointing out some critical aspects in modeling methods and experimental tests. It is shown how the assumptions that are at the basis of tests of masonry walls are acceptable (within certain limits) only for few types of masonry (bricks with mortar and horizontal rows). On the contrary, in the case of masonry-stone with irregular texture the noncompliance of such hypothesis leads to some important contradictions. It will be shown, for example, how the in-plane resistance of a wall panel depends on the type of test performed. It will be highlighted as the response of these walls is dependent on factors usually not considered in the Constructions Codes, such as the sliding friction and the connections between the stone elements, the constraints of the wall, the entity of the axial stress.

Abstract
This paper deals with some considerations on the mechanical characteristics of masonry pointing out some critical aspects in modeling methods and experimental tests. It is shown how the assumptions that are at the basis of tests of masonry walls are acceptable (within certain limits) only for few types of masonry (bricks with mortar and horizontal rows). On the contrary, in the case of masonry-stone with irregular texture the noncompliance of such hypothesis leads to some important contradictions. It will be shown, for example, how the in-plane resistance of a wall panel depends on the type of test performed. It will be highlighted as the response of these walls is dependent on factors usually not considered in the Constructions Codes, such as the sliding friction and the connections between the stone elements, the constraints of the wall, the entity of the axial stress.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
