To address the problem regarding the seismic vulnerability of old unreinforced masonry (URM) constructions, an experimental program was undertaken to study the effectiveness of Glass Fiber-Reinforced Plastics (GFRP) systems as a seismic retrofit intervention for laterally loaded URM walls that are prone to shear failure during earthquakes. This paper presents the initial results of a series of shear tests carried out on wall panels made of solid bricks reinforced with an innovative technique by means of jacketing with GFRP mesh inserted into a thermo-insulating plaster. External jacketing was made of low-strength lime based plasters. Tests were carried out in laboratory according to specification of ASTM 519-02 (Diagonal Tension Test Method). The test results enabled the determination of the shear modulus and strength of the brickwork masonry before and after the application of the GFRP reinforcement. The panels strengthened with the GFRP exhibited a significant improvement in lateral load-carrying capacity when compared to the control panels.

Abstract
The panels strengthened with the GFRP exhibited a significant improvement in lateral load-carrying capacity when compared to the control panels.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
