Results of shear tests aimed at improving the lateral behaviour of the wall panels reinforced with stainless strips externally attached using mechanical joints are presented in this paper. Modest ratios of metal reinforcement can increase beam shear capacity and manipulate failure mode from brittle tensile in the unreinforced beam to a more ductile failure in the strengthened wall panels. Application of mechanical joints presents a solution of reversibility, compatibility and durability for reinforced historic masonry. The experimental campaign focuses on lateral load, angular strain relationship and failure modes in order to increase the loading capacity and stiffness of the wall panel. Stone and brickwork panels with nominal dimensions 900 x 900 mm were reinforced with unbonded stainless strips. Special coach screws 8 mm diameter, 100 mm length, grade 8.8, were used to reversibly attach the reinforcement. All panels were tested until failure under the diagonal tension arrangement. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the reinforcement method and ability to reversibly repair masonry, representing a capability to be utilised in the restoration and upgrading of masonry structures.
