This paper aims to show that the architrave on which Jacques Maritain’s argumentative framework rests, when he reflects on the depths of the mystery that Israel is, is constituted, starting from an evident Pauline matrix, by the tension opened between human being’s fidelitas/infidelitas to God and God’s fidelitas to human being. The essay is organized in two main parts : the first outlines the historical context and the relevance of the Maritainian reflections, showing their underlying structure ; the second one studies how the conceptual couple fidelitas/infidelitas illuminates some fundamental points of this approach.

Abstract

This paper aims to show that the architrave on which Jacques Maritain’s argumentative framework rests, when he reflects on the depths of the mystery that Israel is, is constituted, starting from an evident Pauline matrix, by the tension opened between human being’s fidelitas/infidelitas to God and God’s fidelitas to human being. The essay is organized in two main parts : the first outlines the historical context and the relevance of the Maritainian reflections, showing their underlying structure ; the second one studies how the conceptual couple fidelitas/infidelitas illuminates some fundamental points of this approach.
