In order to elucidate the mechanisms for ovule abortion in olive, genes potentially involved in the ovary and flower development has been isolated and investigated. The transcriptional analysis has been performed on samples from the cultivars Leccino and Dolce Agogia, which exhibited higher and lower fruit set. The results showed that transcripts for nuclear genes, sucrose synthase, glycolsyltransferase, chloroplastic gene, psbA gene, and mitochondrial ATPase gne could be involved during flower development. Finally, in order to consider a higher number of genes differentially expressed, an experimental approach based on suppressive subtractive hybridisation (SSH) was employed on Leccino sampled at different times of development.
