Cloacal swabs were collected from two groups of chickens reared with a conventional and a free-range system and analyzed for the presence of Campylobacter spp. The microorganism was never detected at the moment of introduction in the farm. After 55 days an 80% positivity was found in the conventional flock, while the prevalence in the free-range one was 83%. Finally, immediately before slaughter, the prevalence values were 90% and 87% in the conventional and free-range farms respectively. No difference in the distribution of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli was detected in the two rearing systems considered and coinfection was frequently found

Abstract
Cloacal swabs were collected from two groups of chickens reared with a conventional and a free-range system and analyzed for the presence of Campylobacter spp. The microorganism was never detected at the moment of introduction in the farm. After 55 days an 80% positivity was found in the conventional flock, while the prevalence in the free-range one was 83%. Finally, immediately before slaughter, the prevalence values were 90% and 87% in the conventional and free-range farms respectively. No difference in the distribution of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli was detected in the two rearing systems considered and coinfection was frequently foundI documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
