This article discusses the worldwide reputation of Italian extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) as a high-quality product, and the problem of exploiting this attribute by other virgin olive oil manufacturers through false claims that their products are made in Italy. The quality of Italian EVOO products is described, highlighting the climatic conditions in which olives are produced and their contents of phytochemicals that are known to confer human health benefits, such as fatty acids, phenolic compounds, and tocopherols. The importance of the "protected designation of origin" scheme to promote and protect EVOO products made in Italy is also discussed.
